| 所以,我给大家讲,现在的人学修行,其实只要掌握佛法这个根本,你念佛也能往生,参禅也能得定,修密法也能这生成就,那就是要生起出离心,发菩提心。你发了菩提心,要把你的累生累劫的障碍消除了,要把你的所有功德集中起来,你的修行才能成功。如果你功德集不起来,你一修行就有烦恼,就有障碍,这就证明了我们累生累劫的福报浅薄。所以,能海上师在修行当中,他考虑了一个最重要的问题,现在人修行难,如果我们的功德和资粮不够,很难成就,所以他在修行当中写了一本书,就是《定道资粮颂》,他提倡的要资粮足够才能定道。 |
So, I tell you that, for nowadays people to learn from Buddha, in fact, only if grasping the essentials of the dharma, that is generating the mind of renunciation and the mind for Bodhi, you can go to the Pure-land after death by repeating the Buddha’s name, can attain the samadhi through meditation, also can achieve the Buddha-hood in this life by practicing the esoteric dharma. Having generated the mind for Bodhi, you shall eliminate the hindrances of all past lives, and collect all your merits and virtues, thus your practice can be successful. If you merits and virtues cannot be collected, once you practice you will have vexations and hindrances, which proves the slightness of our blessed-rewards of all past lives. So, considering the most important issue in practice, Gure Neng Hai thought that it’s difficult for nowadays people to practice, and if our merits, virtues and Sambhara are not enough, we can hardly make achievements. So, during his practice he wrote a book, the ‘Eulogy for Sambhara’, advocating that Sambhara must be sufficient for attaining the Buddha-hood. |
| 我经常举这个例子,资粮足够的人,福报多的人,培福多的人,他好像是一坨黄金,这坨黄金放在这个地方,不管你是什么妖风、邪风,东南西北风,你都把他吹不走。如果没有功德的人,累生累劫福报少的人,他所得的资粮少,福报很轻,就好像一坨棉花,只要吹一点风,轻轻吹一下就都跑掉了。谁在你耳朵边吹一下,就倒了。甘孜州来了个活佛,他马上跑过去了,甘孜来了个堪布马上又跑过去了。这些人跑了一辈子,脚杆跑得起老茧,结果跑得自己烦恼越来越多。 |
I often take the example that, one with enough Sambhara and much merits and virtues is just like a big piece of gold, which once being put here cannot be blew away no matter the wind blowing from what directions; while the other without enough merits, virtues and Sambhara is just like a big piece of cotton, which can be blew away only by gentle breeze. He’d collapse if someone just breezes near his ears. He’d immediately run there if a Living-Buddha comes to Ganzi canton, and again right away run here if a Khenpo comes. Such kind of people kept running here and there for a whole life time, even with calluses under their feet, however in the end, themselves’ vexations became more and more. |
| 我有个弟子,是东北人,在五明佛学院去学了三年,走到白塔寺,他刚好一进山门,整个白塔寺都充满了那个很臭的气味。我一点都没夸张,啥子气味呀,他已有三年没洗澡的臭气,来到白塔寺的第一件事情,就把衣服全部换下来,那些好心的居士给他洗了,花了一天时间才洗完,他就是去得到了这一个成绩。第二个成绩,就是他的烦恼比以前还要重,贪心比以前还大,嗔心比以前更多,谁说一句,他跳起来比任何人都高。你是学佛的人,就是要学得心平气和,烦恼更少。所以,他越学越麻烦,去学别人不洗澡,学那个大家都听不懂的东西,你能开发智慧吗?我们所说的语言,就是要大家都听得懂那个语言,才能起作用,我们所写的文字,要大家都能看得懂,它才能起作用。如我所讲的方法,大家要能够运用起来就有作用,而你那个方法,如果大家用起来没有好处,那么你那个方法就不称其为法了,至少来说,是跟大家不相适应。 |
I have a disciple from the northeast of China, who went to study in the Wuming Buddhism Institute for 3 years. I’m not exaggerating that as soon as he walked into the gate of the mountain, the whole White Tower Temple was full of his bad smell of having not taken a bath for 3 years. After coming to the White Tower Temple, the first thing he did is taking off all his cloths, which take those kind-hearted Upasakas a whole day to wash. That is the first ‘achievement’ he got. The second one was that his vexation, greed and anger were more and greater than before. Hearing one comment from someone, he would jump more highly than any others. As a learner from Buddha, one should have learned to be heart-easy and less vexation. So, the more he learned, the more troubles he was in. Can one open up the wisdom by learning from others not to take paths, or by learning things that nobody can understand? The language we speak shall be understood by everyone thus can it work; the character we write shall be read by everyone thus can it act. E.g., the methods taught by me shall be useful if everybody can apply them to the practice; while your method shall not be called a method if proven useless through everybody’s practice, at least, it was not suitable for everybody. |
| 所以现在人学佛法,就是要抓住佛法修行的根本,不要去赶形式,不要去看哪个学得多,不要去听哪个吹牛吹得响,嗑子吹得响。我们如果生起了出离心,把我们所做的每一件好事,每产生一个念头,每念一句佛号,都回向给众生, 愿把自己的功德,作为一种度化众生的功德簿,那你就是很快乐的人,所以现在人学佛不要去撵形式。就是要大家生起出离心,发菩提心,与观世音菩萨相应,你这一生就能成就,这是千真万确的。 |
So, for nowadays people, to learn the Buddha-dharma must grasp the essentials of its practicing, do not pursue the form, do not go to see who learns more or to hear who talks bigger. If having generated the mind of renunciation and returning to all beings that every good thing we did, every good wish we made and every sentence of the Buddha’s name we repeated, as well as wishing to rescue all beings with own merits and virtues, then you will be a very happy one. So, nowadays people of learning from Buddha shall not pursue the form. If only generating the mind of renunciation and the mind for Bodhi and corresponding to Avalokiteshvara, everybody can achieve the Buddha-hood in this life. This is absolutely true. |
| 要说念咒念得多,你们肯定没有我念得多,要说学法学得多,你们肯定没有我学得多。我从1966年,开始就学道术,我原来给大家所讲的,踏罡布斗,披发杖剑,那个时候是吃铁吐火的年代,我练道术踏魁罡二字,不说是吞云吐雾,至少来说,画个符还是不成问题,能一口气就画108道符,我现在把那些小儿科的伎俩都收起来了,收刀捡卦,因为它是不可能解决问题的把戏。 |
Talking of reciting more mantras, you couldn’t exceed me; talking of learning more methods, you also couldn’t exceed me. I began to learn Taoism techniques since 1996; as what I’ve told you before, not mention blowing a cloud, in those years, at least I was able to draw 108 Taoism symbols in one breath. Now I’ve given up all those useless tricks, because they are just acrobatics which couldn’t solve the problem. |
| 所以不发菩提心,不把自己的功德回向给众生,不抓住修行的根本,而以前的修行,最多有点人天福报,最多学到点佛教的道理,去糊弄别人。现在我发现很多出家人,就是懂得一点佛教的道理,只是把这个道理拿去糊弄别人,他不是修正自己,而是去修理别人,这种人还不少呢!对现在的学修人来说,要摆脱这种可悲的局面,和现在这种很不乐观的现象,要使大家在修行的问题上,一定要抓住根本,生起出离心,发菩提心,把所有的功德回向给众生,修行不为了自己,而是把自己修证来的智慧,都贡献给社会,多做一点好事。 |
So, if not generating the mind for Bodhi, not returning own merits and virtues to all beings, and not grasping the essentials of practice, one could at most get a few rewards for men and deva through previous practice, or at most learn some arguments of Buddhism to fool others. Now I found many monks just understood some arguments of Buddhism, and just use them to correct others instead of correcting themselves. Such people are not few. Nowadays learners and practicers shall get rid of such woeful situation and the present very unhappy phenomena; on the issue of practice, all of us must grasp the essentials, generate the mind of renunciation and the mind for Bodhi, return all the merits and virtues to all beings, practice not only for ourselves, contribute the wisdom that proven through own practice to the society, and do more good things. |
| 学佛不要跟生活和工作对立起来,如果我们把学佛与工作、生活对立起来,那至少来说,你那个学佛是学得不如法的。因为佛法与世间法,他是融通的,佛法是解决人的问题,我们人与人之间,人与生活、人与工作都不协调了,那么佛法就失去了他的本来面目和真实内容。我就是要提倡现在人学佛,要讲求实际一点,那就是抓住佛法的根本。 |
Learning from Buddha shall not conflict with living and working. If setting your learning from Buddha against your living and working, then at least I can say that you didn’t learn according to the dharma. Because the Buddha-dharma is in harmony with the laws of the temporal world. The Buddha-dharma is for solving the problems of men, if the relationships of people between people, living, and working are inconsistent, well then the Buddha-dharma would lose its original features and true contents. What I’m advocating is that nowadays people to learn from Buddha must be practical, that is to grasp the essentials of the Buddha-dharma. |
